Three schools in Essex have been recognised for brilliant teaching in this year's Tes Schools Awards. The awards, dubbed the 'Oscars of Education', are a prestigious programme celebrating the best of education across the UK.

Schools and teachers in the East of England shortlisted represent more than half of the 21 categories. The shortlist is compiled by expert judges, including school leaders.

Among those recognised across the region are three schools from Essex. Dagenham Park Church of England School is shortlisted for the Inclusive School of the Year award; The Wickford Church of England School is in the running for Primary School of the Year and Empower Learning Academy Trust - which looks after several schools - have been shortlisted for Trust Team of the Year 9 and less.

All three schools have received glowing reports from Ofsted in recent years. Inspectors said students at Dagenham Park are "respectful to one another and to staff" and "enjoy celebrating their differences". The curriculum at Wickford CofE School is "highly ambitious" with pupils offered a range of subjects and "a high level of respect for each other".

Jon Severs, Editor of Tes Magazine said: "Congratulations to all the shortlisted entries - the standard was so high this year despite the challenges schools face. It is critical we celebrate excellence and share it widely so we can ensure that the fantastic work happening in education is properly recognised."

Winners will be announced on June 21 at a glittering gala awards night at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, in London.
