About 570 government representatives from 135 countries and international organization leaders began the five-day meeting, where they will review and adopt the "Special Report on 1.5 Degrees" that includes suggestions on ways to curb global warming.

The report's "Summary for Policymakers" will be released during a press conference on Oct. 8.

The report is expected to be used as a scientific basis for discussions at the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP24) to be held in Poland in December.

President Moon Jae-in called for action to battle climate change.

"Abnormal climate has become the norm and is posing threats to us," Moon said in a video message to the meeting. "Climate change, which inflicts greater damage on developing countries and vulnerable people, is a task that we must address. The entire world needs to exercise determination and act."

Lee Hoe-sung, chair of the IPCC since 2015, expressed gratitude to the authors and governments around the world for their support for the report.
